How to set up Google Analytics
Hi all, Today I will show you how to install Google Analytics on you blog or on your website. You will discover step by step how to open an account, get the tracking code and install it on your website.
What is Google Analytics
Google Analytics is web traffic analytics service developed by Google in 2005. It is a free service giving you access to many web analytical tools such as:
- Real time traffic
- Bounce rate
- Conversions
- Geographical / Gender visits slip
History of Google Analytics
Google Analytics have been Launched by Google on 14th November 2005 after acquired Urchin Software Corp. (web statistics analysis program) in April 2005. The tool was already free when it been released. Google Analytics democratised advanced web analytics to the masses. From 2005 till now, Google Analytics have been constantly updated with new features such as APIs and attribution modelling.
Why do you need Google Analytics?
Google analytics became on of the more important tool for businesses with an online presence. Google Analytics tracks and analyses the traffic on your website. These data, once analysed, will help you to find new business opportunities. Google Analytics will help you to answer some questions such as:
- How many people are visiting my website?
- Which other websites bring you traffic?
- Is your social posts bring you some visits?
- Where the traffic come from, I mean from which country / city / area.
- Gender? Age?
- Which channels bring me the more valuable traffic?
Install Google Analytics step by step
Subscribe to Google Analytics and get your Tracking ID
You just need to go on Google Analytics website then click on Sign In (top right corner) and click on Analytics. Then you will need to login (if you already have google account) or sign up to a Google account.
Few steps, and your account will be ready to use. Now Google Analytics need to know who you are, your website. Once you click on Sign up, you will access a form asking for some site information:
- Website or Mobile app
- Account Name
- Website Name
- Website URL
- Industrie Category
- Reporting Time Zone
- Data sharing Setting
Once you filled out the form, click on Get your tracking ID.
Done ! Now you have your Tracking ID and the tracking code for your website.
Wordpress blog or website
If you have a blog or website build on Wordpress, I advise you to installs a plugin. In the video below, you will find the full process from the plugin search to the code's implementation. First of all, log on your wordpress platform, Then in the menu look for Plugins tab.
Click on the tab and then click on Add New.
Once you are on the Plugins installation page, in the search box, enter the name Web shouters and choose the Plugin “Verify Google Analytics & webmaster tools”. Of course there are others plugin to link / install Google Analytics on your blog / website. But I tried this one and I really like it. Very simple and easy to use. Once you install it, you need to activate it.
Your plugin is activated, but you still do not have Google Analytics installs on your website. For that you need to in the Settings tab, and click on WS Webmaster tools. Once you are in the setting section of your new plugin and lucky you, the 1st tab is the one we are looking for: Google Analytics.
Now, you just need to copy the tracking code provided by Google Analytics in the empty block and click on “Save”. You have Google Analytics install on your blog / website. Leave Google Analytics 24 / 48 hours before you get some data.
Website or blog without any website management platform
When you build your website without platforms such as wordpress and Joomla and you create the all code. In that case, it’s even more easy to install Google Analytics tracking code. Once Google Analytics give you your tracking code ID, you need to copy and past it in the <head> section of your website. Do it for all your website pages.
And it’s done, in 24 to 48 hours, you should see website data on in your analytics account. Now you set up one of the more important website traffic tool, you are ready to improve your marketing actions. With Google Analytics and the new answers to your questions, you are able to improve your website design, know more your audience, analyse your paid campaigns and their achievements or define which social media is the more profitable for your business.
